Overview
Founded in 1997 by Captain Bill Sheehan, Hackensack Riverkeeper works to protect, preserve and restore the Hackensack River and its 215-square mile watershed for the benefit of the people and wildlife that call it home. As such, we are a resource for ALL the communities of our watershed; we regularly consult with municipalities in Bergen, Hudson, Essex, Passaic and Morris Counties in NJ and Rockland County, NY as well as New York City. First and foremost we are a clean water organization that fulfills its mission through a fourfold strategy of environmental action, advocacy, education and litigation. In addition, we inform public policy decisions, conduct environmental education programs, run active conservation initiatives and help ensure equitable public waterfront access for all. We partner with the private sector as well as with our many colleagues in conservation to solve problems caused by decades of overdevelopment and unsustainable practices. Now in our 27th year of effective operation, Hackensack Riverkeeper continues as a resource for any and all who wish to help us chart a course for true sustainability and a cleaner, greener future.
