Overview
The North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority (NJTPA) is the federally authorized Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) for the 13-county northern and central New Jersey region. The region has 384 of the state's 564 municipalities. The NJTPA partners with local and state agencies to help fund more than $3 billion in transportation investments annually and provide a forum for interagency cooperation and public input.
MPOs are federally mandated and federally funded transportation planning organizations made up of representatives from local government and key transportation agencies. The NJTPA Board of Trustees includes 15 local elected officials representing 13 counties—Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Hunterdon, Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris, Ocean, Passaic, Somerset, Sussex, Union and Warren—and the cities of Newark and Jersey City.
The NJTPA is the federally authorized Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) for 7 million people in the 13-county northern New Jersey region.
